TOEFL - IELTS - Listening Lesson 14-Learn English with Steve Ford

TOEFL what you need to know about choosing answers and recognizing testing points

if you are unsure of what answer to choose, trust your first intution of what sounds rigth or what seems right.

don´t go back and change an answer unless you know that you have made a mistake.

if you have no idea which answer to choose, first try to eliminate the ones that you think are incorrect.

testing points are the categories that are used to develop questions, vocabulary words, idioms and phrases, intonation or stress patterns or particular types of questions,

if you run out of time and have not finished the test, go quickly through the questons, just marking one letter for each.

TOEFL What are testing points?

A testing point is the main point of a TOEFL question. it is the specific area of english on which you are being tested.

an understanding of the mayor testing points of the TOEFL, therefore, will help you organize your study time and help you prepare for many different kinds of questions you will see on the real test. when you study with the idea of learning to recognize testing points rather than simply to answer individual questions, you are using a strategy that will help you take the real TOEFL.

A testing point migth be a grammatical structure, a common vocabulary word, an idiom, an intonation, or a particular type of reading or listening question.

TOEFL Eliminate incorrect answer choices

if you do not immediately see the answer you think is correct, begin by eliminating the ones you know are not correct.

This mean that if you can eliminate two of the answer choices, you increase your chance of being correct from 25 percent to 50 percent.

Ways to eliminate answer choices if you do not know the correct answer:

Look at all the answer choices, and eliminate those that seem wrong.

try to figure out the testing point.

if you are running out of time and do not the answers, or if you have no time to read the questions, just mark or click on one letter for all remaining questions.

TOEFL Your first choice might be the best

Often in test taking, the first impression is the best. so, unless you are sure that your first answer is wrong, it is better not to change your first choice. This knowledge will also help you move more quickly through the test.

TOEFL Choosing an answer

Strategies for choosing answers

Trust your intuition

if an answer seems rigth, even if you are not sure why, it might be best to trust that impression. The same applies if an answer seems wrong eliminate it and choose a diferent answer.

this strategy might not work for you every time, of course. it also does not imply that you should use only your feelings to answer the questions.
